What is media literacy and why is it important?

This week we read and learned about media literacy. What is media literacy? It is the ability to both read and write visual information, the ablity to learn visually to think and solve problems in the visual domain(http://www.iste.org/docs/excerpts/MEDLIT-excerpt.pdf). The reading that we were given this week gave examples of reading pictures. Through the pictures one might see something and have a totally different perspective of what the picture is really about. Children of the future are already expose to technology. Teachers can help students learn how to use media literacy in a smart, safe, and healthy environment. Teachers can help students by guiding them how to learn visually and thing and solve problems.
With the ever growing world of technology it is important that teachers prepare themselves for the changes. It is important to grow as technology also grows and being aware and understanding of how all people learn differently. So I conclude that media literacy is important because with so many children now a days learning from the screen, it is important to help them visually see more than one side.
